And while that isn’t necessarily an indicator of talent, there are no breakout performances in any of the episodes. Though Carpenter is a big name in horror, the actors pulled into Suburban Screams are not exactly recognizable. These dramatic recreations are one of the major contributors to the uneven quality of the show. The nature of each episode varies wildly from one to the next, and aside from the talking-head format and dramatic recreations, there is little thematic consistency across the series. Each episode features a fully-contained “true” story, as told by someone directly involved with the real-life incident. Rather than approaching his horror anthology series as a straight fiction story in installments, like American Horror Story, Slasher, or Castle Rock, Carpenter takes Suburban Screams into the non-fiction realm. If we ignore his 1998 film Vampires (and we really should ignore it), Carpenter has one of the most pristine cinematic records for churning out terrifying horror time and time again.īut aside from a couple of episodes of Masters of Horror, this king of darkness has not stepped his toes into television or episodic series until this month’s Peacock release, John Carpenter's Suburban Screams. Not to mention the fact that he went on to make In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, and Christine. His remake of The Thing in 1982 is still regularly cited as one of the most terrifying films of all time. If that's not enough, Pluto.TV has an entire streaming channel dedicated to the show, with episodes airing 24-hours-a-day.John Carpenter is a master of horror - the man practically invented the slasher subgenre with 1978’s Halloween (with a big assist from Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Peeping Tom). Seasons 1 and 8-12 are available to watch on Hulu. While Netflix may not have recaptured what made Unsolved Mysteries so special, there's still the old episodes to watch-and many of them are streaming online. So if you are a fan of the original series and were hoping you could kick off July diving back into a mysterious world, this likely isn't going to be the show for you. If you're going to cash in on the name value of a property, you should at least try to resemble said property. However, the one thing it is not is Unsolved Mysteries. It fits in nicely with the streaming service's long line of true crime and documentary programming. Ultimately, Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries isn't a bad show. In the original series, episodes tended to cover three or four different mysteries-five during Farina's season on Spike TV-giving viewers a sampling of the different types of stories the show covered. Actually seeing what it might have looked like, though, is an entirely different experience and one that's paramount to Unsolved Mysteries.Īnother interesting change, though one that probably makes the jobs of the show's research team easier, is that each episode only tracks a single mystery. It's one thing to hear those involved talk about what happened. These were a staple of the original show and, honestly, one of the most exciting parts of any given episode. Gone too are the dramatic reenactments of the events being explored in the series. While that's not necessarily a bad decision for a true crime documentary series, it's not what anybody who has watched old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries would be expecting. Instead, the stories are told through new and archived interviews. There is nobody in the host role in the reboot. When the series was later continued after Stacks' death, Law & Order star Dennis Farina took over to revisit previous mysteries and give updates that has been discovered since the original episodes aired. He's as synonymous with the show as anything else. Robert Stack was the voice of Unsolved Mysteries for years, serving as the host of the first 13 seasons. Gone is the hosting and narration, for instance. Now Playing: Best Shows And Movies To Stream For June 2020 - Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, Shudder By clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot's
